1. Joseph Mundwiller, Sr. son of Katherina Vorten, was born on 23 December 1798 in Wentzwiller, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France, died on 24 October 1870 in Hermann, Gasconade County, Missouri at age 71, and was buried in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery (Apprill-Mundwiller) Little Berger, Missouri.

2. Balthasar Mundwiller (Joseph, Sr.1) was born on 6 January 1827 in Wentzwiller, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France, died on 2 November 1878 in Hermann, Gasconade County, Missouri at age 51, and was buried in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery (Apprill-Mundwiller) Little Berger, Missouri.

General Notes: Balthasar Mundwiller, was born January 6, 1827 in Wensville, Alsace, on the border of Germany and France, the son of Joseph Mundwiller. Joseph Mundwiller, born December 23, 1798 in Alsace and died October 24, 1870. Joseph's mother Katherina (Vorten) Mundwiller was born April 28, 1774 in France, and died April 11, 1858 in Hermann. They are both buried in The Apprill-Mundwiller Cemetery. They came to America through The Port in New Orleans in 1832. Balthasar's twin brother Joseph contacted polio that crippled his leg while in New Orleans. Joseph was a private in Capt. Bernard Stoucklin's Co. D, Gasconade Co, Battalion, Mo. Home Guards and a member of Col Hassendeubel Post No.13,G.A.R., St. Louis, Mo.. He died August 9, 1906 in St. Louis. He is buried in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in St.Louis.

Balthasar came to America with his parents and other German families, including the Fritz family, in 1832 and were all among the first settlers of Gasconade Co, MO.

He married Magdelena Fritz, November 11, 1847 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Louis, MO and settled about six miles south of Hermann where they lived their entire lives. Magdelena, was born January 23, 1829 in Alsace, on the border of Germany and France, the daughter of (Joseph) Fritz (a Joseph Fritz 60 bp.France is living with them in 1860).

Balthasar was a farmer, a member of the wide-awakes, took an active interest in schools, roads, and other improvements was a farmer and served as magistrate. He and Magdelena helped organize the first Catholic congregation and helped build the first Catholic Church in Hermann, MO. They later helped with the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Little Berger, MO.

During the Civil War Balthasar was one of the first to take up arms in answer to his country's call, joining the 1st Gasconade County Battalion (a 3 month Home Guard unit) and served as 1st Lt. of Co.E (June 1861-Oct 1861). This battalion was organized in June, 1861, with a total of 473 men, and its services accepted by Gen. Lyon. These services consisted of guarding bridges on the Pacific Railroad, and in escorting provision trains from Hermann to Montgomery City, MO. It also participated in the expedition from Miller's Landing to Georgetown, in Franklin Co., MO. The 1st Gasconade County Battalion disbanded October 1, 1861, and reorganized as Hunhausen' Battalion USRC (3 years) in January, 1862 (also known as the Gasconade County Battalion Reserve Corps). In this battalion, Balthasar served as Capt. of Co.C (Jan 7, 1862-Jan 18, 1862).

The Gasconade County Battalion Reserve Corps was limited from the nature of its organization to services within the State. It was consolidated with the 3rd MO USRC by order of the adjutant general, dated January 18, 1862 as the 4th MO Inf. USV. It was one of the regiments entertaining no idea of compromise with those attempting to destroy the Government. Balthasar raised Co.E of the 4th MO Inf. USV and served as Capt. of Co.E (commissioned Jun 7, 1862 from Nov 5, 1861-mustered out). The 4th MO Inf. USV was employed chiefly within the State, and performed valuable service to the cause including duty in Districts of Southwest Missouri and St. Louis at Pacific City and St. Louis till February, 1863. It was mustered out of the service under Special Orders No.13, February 1, 1863.

Balthasar died November 2, 1878 after a protracted illness and Magdelena died November 13, 1916. They are buried in Roark Twp #97, S20 T45N R4W, known as the Apprill-Mundwiller Cemetery (formerly Little Berger Catholic Cemetery, located on Berkemeyer Road off of Highway H, 6 miles south of Hermann).

Balthasar married Maria Martilena (Magdalena) Fritz, daughter of Joseph Fritz and Anna Marie Wagner, on 11 November 1847 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Louis, Missouri. Maria was born on 23 January 1828 in Alsace, France, died on 13 November 1916 in Little Berger, Gasconade County, Missouri at age 88, and was buried on 14 November 1916 in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery (Apprill-Mundwiller) Little Berger, Missouri. The cause of her death was from Brights disease.

6. Alphonso Balthasar P. Mundwiller (Balthasar2, Joseph, Sr.1) was born on 14 October 1851 in Little Berger, Gasconade County, Missouri, died on 8 March 1926 in Hermann, Gasconade County, Missouri at age 74, and was buried on 10 March 1926 in St. George Catholic Cemetery in Hermann, Gasconade County, Missouri.

General Notes: A. B. P. Mundwiller, farmer and magistrate of Roark Township, is the son of Balthasar and Magdalena (Fritz) Mundwiller, natives of Alsace, Germany (France), who, when children, came with their parents to America in 1832, the latter being among the first settlers of Gasconade County. On reaching years of discretion the father and mother of the subject of this sketch went to St. Louis, in 1847, were married and then returned to Gasconade County, where they spent the remainder of their lives. The father was a wide awake man, and one who took an active interest in schools, roads and other improvements. He for some time, served as magistrate.

During the late war he was one of the first to take up arms in answer to his country's call, and was first lieutenant in the Home Guards. Afterward he raised Company E, of the Fourth Missouri Volunteer Infantry, United States army, and was elected captain, which commission he held until mustered out of service. Both he and family were members of the Catholic Church. He died at the age of fifty-two, lamented by all. Of the twelve children born to their marriage, nine are still living. The eldest of this family is our subject, who was born in Roark Township in 1851, and educated in the common schools and High School at Hermann. He remained at home until twenty-four years of age, and then engaged in teaching, which profession he followed in winter, and engaged in farming during the summer.

In 1875 he married Augusta Keuper, a native also of Roark Township. In 1882 Mr. Mundwiller was chosen magistrate of his township. He is a Republican in politics, and both he and wife are members of the Catholic church. He has 120 acres, and is accounted a man of intelligence and thrift.

Alphonso married Augusta Keuper, daughter of Herman Keuper and Elisabeth Wessing, on 18 July 1876 in St. George Catholic Church in Hermann, Gasconade County, Missouri. Augusta was born on 27 January 1859 in Gasconade County, Missouri, died on 5 April 1933 in St. Louis County, Missouri at age 74, and was buried in St. George Catholic Cemetery in Hermann, Gasconade County, Missouri.

Theophilus Benton Mundwiller (Balthasar2, Joseph, Sr.1) was born on 9 September 1853 in Little Berger, Gasconade County, Missouri, died on 22 October 1913 in St. Louis, Missouri at age 60, and was buried in St. George Catholic Cemetery in Hermann, Gasconade County, Missouri. The cause of his death was from gall bladder operation.

General Notes: Theophile Mundwiller Dies in St. Louis After Operation

Theophile (Dave) Mundwiller, who was taken to St. Louis two weeks ago, suffering from an aggravated case of gall stones, died in the hospital to which he had been taken, shortly after an operation to remove the trouble had been performed.

Mr. Mundwiller had never been seriously sick during his entire live and though 60 years old had been a man of robust health and fine physical manhood. Three weeks ago he complaint of pains in his side, which shortly after became so intense that the physicians who were called hand had diagnosed the case as gall stone trouble, advised an operation, which was performed last week in a St. Louis hospital, but the disease had so far advanced that he died several days after the operation was carried out.

The remains of the deceased were brought to Hermann and laid to rest Friday in the cemetery of the Catholic St. George Congregation, of which he had been a life long and devout member.

Mr. Mundwiller was born in the Little Berger neighborhood in our county in 1853 and until about 18 years ago lived on the farm, when he moved to Hermann where for almost 12 years he filled the position of overseer of the streets of our city. Besides his widow, one son and one daughter, he is survived by his aged mother and several sisters and brothers.

Gustavus John Mundwiller (Balthasar2, Joseph, Sr.1) was born on 8 March 1857 in Little Berger, Gasconade County, Missouri, died on 28 May 1938 in Little Berger, Gasconade County, Missouri at age 81, and was buried on 30 May 1938 in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery (Apprill-Mundwiller) Little Berger, Missouri. The cause of his death was from heart problems.

General Notes: Gustavus J. Mundwiller, son of Balthasar and Magdalena (Fritz) Mundwiller, was born in Gasconade County, Mo., March 8, 1857, and received his education in the common schools, High School at Hermann, and finished at the Rolla School of Mines in 1876. He then, for five terms, taught in the schools of this county, and at the same time carried on farming. In 1881 he married Miss Barbara Schuster, a native of Gasconade County, born in 1859. Four children were born to this union, two sons and two daughters. In political principles Mr. Mundwiller is a Democrat, and he and wife are members of the Catholic Church. Having moved on his farm in 1880, he has since followed agricultural pursuits and has 108 acres of good land. He is turning his attention to the raising of fine draft horses, and is succeeding quite well. He has lived in this county all his life, and is accounted a successful farmer and a highly respected citizen.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo A. Mundwiller of Gray Summit, Mo. formerly of Little Berger, met death Thursday evening of last week in an automobile accident.

The unfortunate couple left their home in Gray Summit at about 7:30 P.M. with the intention of visiting friends at Union. Their nephew Severin Apprill, formerly of near Hermann and now employed at Gray Summit, furnished the car and served as driver. They had driven but a short distance on highway toward the Wedge or Diamond when the driver sought to pass a car ahead. After he had started around the car ahead he noticed a truck approaching, the truck having no lights. Apprill put on his brakes and then gave his car the gas to get in line again. In doing so he shot to the right too far and the car went over the thirty-foot embankment. The car rolled over several times. When passersby, who say the accident reached the bottom of the embankment, they found the driver bruised, Mr. Mundwiller dead and Mrs. Mundwiller unconscious. Mr Mundwiller had suffered a broken neck and his wife died fifteen minutes later as a result of having sustained a fracture of the skull. The car was a wreck.

Leo A. Mundwiller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Mundwiller, was born at Little Berger in 1883, his age at death being 43 years and 10 months. Mrs. Mundwiler, 44, nee Elizabeth Epple, was a daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Epple of Little Berger.

The couple was married in 1906 at St. Joseph's Chruch at Little Berger. For many years the couple resided at Berger, where Mr. Mundwiller was employed by he MO Pac, later making their home at Gray Summit, where he served as station agent.

Only two years ago they built themselves a pretty home there and , besides attending to his duties at the railway station, Mr. Mundwiller, assisted by his wife, conducted a poultry ranch. They were a jolly, friendly and hospitable couple, highly thrifty and ambitious, faithful to their church and greatly esteemed by their legion of friends.
Their death, so sudden and unexpected has filled many hearts with deep sorrow.

Funeral services for both Mr. and Mrs Mundwiller were conducted Monday morning at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Epple at Little Berger and a Requiem was celebrated by Rev. Father Schwartz in St. George's Catholic Church in Hermann, burial being in the church cemetery.

Mr. Mundwiller is survived by his father, Gus. Mundwiller, his brothers D.A. Mundwiller of Denver and Frank Mundwiller of Columbia, his sisters, Mrs Netta Flake and Mrs. Ella Hug of near Herman, Mrs Emma Walther and Mrs Frieda Tegtmeier of St. Louis.

A son, Leon Mundwiller and a sister, Zita Mundwiller preceded him in death.

Herbert married Loretta H. Roetheli, daughter of Charles Frank Roetheli and Amalia K. Jordan. Loretta was born in 1913 in Missouri.

Mrs. Hagedorn was married to Gilbert Mundwiller February 9,1924 in Hermann, and to William H. Hagedorn, December 2,1972 in Hermann.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert, September 11,1970, her husband, William H. Hagedorn, July 12,1982; one daughter, Wilmeta Hagedorn; one son-in-law, Norbert Krimmel; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Hagedorn is survived by four sons, Dale Hagedorn, Hermann, Vernon Hagedorn, Rhineland, Earl Hagedorn, Washington, and Jarrel Hagedorn, St.Louis; two daughters, Dorothy Kloeppel, Washington, and Mary Kloeppel, Gerald; 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, June 15 at the Church of the Risen Savior, Rhineland,with Father Rob Fields, celebrant. Interment was in St. George Cemetery,Hermann.

The Hagedorn family was served by Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home,Hermann.

Thelma and Joe were both born in 1912 and grew up in South Saint Louis. They were married on February 18, 1933. The center of their large and loving family, theirs was an exceptional marriage marked by caring and kindness. They made tremendous memories for their children and grandchildren during the many years they spent together at their vacation lake house. Thelma was humorous and wise. She loved adventurous travel, flying with Charles Lindbergh several weeks before his renowned trans-Atlantic flight while a young girl, and vacationing with her sister to Europe during her eighties. We will all miss her deeply and will continue to take care of Grandpa Joe.

She was born 17 November 1919 at Dardenne, the daughter of Thomas and Mathilda Keaveny, nee Roesner.

On 7 October 1952, she married Hugo Edmund Mundwiller at Immaculate Conception Church in Dardenne. Mrs. Mundwiller was a homemaker and member of St. George Ladies Sodality. She was a member of St. Paul's Church at Berger.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Dorothy Keaveny.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann Steiner and husband, Harold, of Hermann, Rosie Mundwiller of Hermann and Joan Mundwiller of Hermann; five sons, Friar Edmund Mundwiller of St. Louis, Joseph Mundwiller and wife, Mary, of Hermann, Michael Mundwiller of Hermann, Philip Mundwiller and wife, Danyee, of Washington and Paul Mundwiller of Hermann; and two sisters-in-law, Alvina Roetheli of Hermann and Loretta Mundwiller of St. Peters. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Burial was in St. George Cemetery at Hermann. Memorials may be made to Franciscan Missions or Masses. The Mundwiller family was served by Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Homes.

General Notes: Alvina Rosa Roetheli (95) was taken home by the angels on November 30, 2013. She and her husband, Carl, enjoyed 58 years of married life while farming in the Little Berger area. After his death in 2003, she continued to live on the family farm with her son, Alvin. Alvina was the daughter of Edwin and Rosa Mundwiller. She was born October 12, 1918, the youngest of ten children. Her siblings, Cecilia Mundwiller, Lillian Mundwiller, Clara Evans, Herbert Mundwiller, George Mundwiller, Edmund Mundwiller, Johanna Mundwiller, Zita Mundwiller and Olivia Schaefer all preceded her in death.

Alvina enjoyed school and was proud of the fact that she had perfect attendance and outstanding scholastic achievement for all eight years at Lower Little Berger School.

She married Carl J. Roetheli at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Little Berger on December 2, 1944, and they had four children.

She was president of the Ladies Sodality there, and after St. Joseph closed, she became a faithful member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Berger. Before her marriage, she worked at the International Shoe Factory in Hermann, and after the children were older, she returned to work at the Floresheim Shoe Factory. She served two terms as president of the American War Mothers and was very supportive of the Frene Valley 4-H Club.

She is survived by three children: Agnes (Harvey) Gaertner of Temecula, CA, Joe (Judy) Roetheli of Liberty, MO, and Alvin Roetheli of Hermann. A daughter, Ann, died at birth. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home, Hermann, Missouri. A rosary service will be held Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Little Berger, Missouri.

Mr. Roetheli was born March 30, 1911, in Berger, the son of Charles F. Roetheli and wife Amalia, nee Jordan.

He was the grandson of a orphaned Swiss immigrant.

Mr. Roetheli was united in marriage Dec. 2, 1944, in Little Berger, to Alvina Rose Mundwiller.

He farmed all of his life. Mr. Roetheli served his country in the U.S. Army. Mr. Roetheli was the charter chairman of the Gasconade County Soil and Water District. He was elected to the local MFA Co-Op Board.

Mr. Roetheli served as president of the Men's Society of St. Joseph Church in Little Berger prior to its closing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Martha McCallon and Laura Mundwiller; one brother, Leander Roetheli; and one child, Ann Roetheli.

Mr. Roetheli is survived by his wife Alvina Rose Roetheli, nee Mundwiller, Hermann; one daughter, Agnes Gaertner, Temecula, Calif.; two sons, Joseph Roetheli, Kansas City, and Alvin Roetheli, Hermann; three sisters, Loretta Mundwiller, St. Peters, Viola Lomando, St. Louis, and Mildred Radtke, Hermann; two grandsons, Steffan Roetheli and Michael Roetheli, both of Kansas City; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 19, at St. Paul's Church, Berger, with the Rev. Dan Mosley officiating.

Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Berger. Memorials to St. George School, Masses or New Fire House in Hermann are preferred.

She was a member of St. George Church, Hermann, and the St. George Ladies Sodality.

Mrs. Mundwiller was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 5, 1996; four sisters, Leona Fogerson, Tarsilla Stone, Serilda Slocum and Antonette Cheney; and four brothers, Felix, Gilbert, Jerome and Eugene Mundwiller.

She is survived by four daughters, Lee Ann Decker and husband Kenneth, Charlotte, N.C.,Patricia Broeker and husband Bob, Washington, Margaret Eikermann and husband Virgil,St. Charles, and Lola Chitwood and husband Charles, Charleston, N.C.; one son Richard Michel and wife Beverly, Hermann; three sisters-in-law, Martha Michel, Marie Michel, and Lavern Michel; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 4, at St. George Church, Hermann, with the Rev. Bill Debo officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

He was a member of I.B.E.W. Local 1 and American Legion Post 297.

Mr. Mundwiller was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kenneth Mundwiller in 2006; and one sister, Dorothy Carey.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Mundwiller, Union; one daughter, Becky Toelke and husband John, Nixa; one daughter-in-law, Carol Mundwiller, Union; five grandchildren, David Mundwiller and wife Sherri, Washington, John Mundwiller and wife Leah and Jason Toelke, all of Nixa, Travis Toelke and wife Dorene, Springfield, and Deborah Baker and husband Tim, Robertsville; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Naert and husband Joe, St. Louis; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 4, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union, with the Rev. Lonnie Webb officiating.

Mrs. Mundwiller was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Hannibal, the daughter of the late Ernest Sullens and wife Rebecca, nee Scott.

She received her education in the De Soto School District. She was united in marriage to Vernon Mundwiller Jan. 18, 1946, in St. Louis. The couple made their home in St. Louis and moved to Union in 1965.

Mrs. Mundwiller was employed in customer service and retail sales. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and she enjoyed shopping and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon; one son, Ken Mundwiller; and one sister and brother-in-law, Roberta and Jack Duebig.

Mrs. Mundwiller is survived by one daughter, Becky Toelke and husband John, Nixa; one daughter-in-law, Carol Mundwiller, Union; five grandchildren, David Mundwiller and wife Sherri, John Mundwiller and wife Leah, Travis Toelke and wife Dorene, Debbie Baker and husband Tim and Jason Toelke; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.

General Notes: James L. Mundwiller, 78, passed away June 21, 2015, at Menorah Medical Center in Leawood, Kan. Mr. Mundwiller was born in Hermann, Mo., on Nov. 18, 1936, the son of Felix B. and Sophia (Bunge) Mundwiller.

He was a graduate of the Hermann High School. He was employed by United Telephone Co. of MO in 1954 in Hermann and retired on April 1, 2006, having served as Installer/Repairman of central office equipment in Lexington and Jefferson City, Mo., area's and with Sprint Western Operations as the Lead Power Engineer for the Local Telephone Division from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends, as well as gardening and home repairs.

He is survived by wife of 56 years, Katherine; son, Michael (Susan); grandchildren, Alexander and Brianna; sisters, Ruth Adams of Vacaville, Calif., Martha (Maynard) Fredrick of Hermann, and Mary (Jerry) Bryan of Linn, Mo. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at Longview Funeral Home, 12700 S. Raytown Rd, Kansas City, Mo. Memorial donations are suggested to St. Jude Hospital for Children. Mr. Michel was born in Hermann, Missouri on October 24, 1946, the son of the late Joseph and Pauline (Mundwiller) Michel.
He was the husband of Beverly (Harrison) Michel. They were married February 25, 1967 at St. George Church, Hermann. She survives in Hermann.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Blake Pearson.
He was a member of St. George Church, Hermann, Missouri, the Hermann Fire Department and was a former city alderman.
He was a carpenter for D & H Sales of Berger for 35 years. He also was a fomer brick layer for Wayne Baumstark and Velton Rohlfing in Hermann. Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandkids.

General Notes: Orlando John (O.J.) Mundwiller died Friday, 20 Dec 2003 and is survived by his wife of 43 years, Donna Brock Mundwiller, his mother, Helen Schwartz Mundwiller; his three children, Mark O. Mundwiller and wife, Patricia, of Hermann, Michael R. Mundwiller and wife, Hope, of Owensville and Kate Mundwiller Katzer and husband Anthony of St. Charles, MO. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Joshua Mundwiller 17, Rachel Mundwiller 15, and Chelsea Mundwiller 11, all of Hermann, Charlotte Mundwiller 10, and Caleb John Mundwiller 7, both of Owensville. He was preceded in death by his father, Judge Orlando A. Mundwiller, in 1985.

O.J. was born 2 May 1940 in Jefferson City to Orlando A. Mundwiller and Helen Schwartz Mundwiller. He grew up in Hermann, MO and graduated from Hermann High School in 1958. On 3 December 1960, he was united in marriage to Donna Brock at Pickneyville, IL. He receivd his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Central Missouri State University in 1962.

In 1966, he graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law. He returned to Hermann to begin his own law practice and operated Gasconade County Abstract Company which was originally established by his father, Judge O.A. Mundwiller. He was a highly regarded title examiner and respected as a real estate attorney across the state. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Peoples Savings Bank for 24 years. He also ran a full time farm operation since 1971 and lived on his farm just south of Hermann while expanding his cattle and farming operations to several areas throughout Gasconade County.

O.J. was an avid collector and restorer of antique tractors and American Flyer toy trains. He loved country music, visited the Grand Ole Opry many times, and collected country music memorabilia. He was a member of the Missouri Bar Association and the Arkansas Bar Association. He was licensed to practice before the Missouri Supreme Court and before the United States Federal Court, Eastern District of Missouri. He was a member of the Gasconade County Historical Society, Model A. Ford Club, St. Louis American Flyer Toy Train Association, Two Cylinder Tractor Club, The Missouri Angus Association, and the Ferguson Enthusiasts of North America.

Visitation for Mr. Mundwiller was held Sunday, December 28, from 4-8 p.m. from the Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home, Hermann, MO. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, at 11:00 a.m. from the funeral home.
