HENRY WINKELMEYER
"Henry Winkelmeyer was born the 7th day of November 1842 in
Germany. With his parents he emigrated to America when but
two years of age. They made their home in St. Louis where
the deceased lived with his parents for 16 years, when at the
age of 18 years, he came with them to Franklin County, where
they located on a farm near Union.
In 1861 at the age of 19, Mr. Winkelmeyer responded to the call
to the Colors, enlisting in the Union army. For three
years he valiantly and courageously defended the cause of the
North, acquitting himself with glory. He was present and
took an active part in the capture of Vicksburg.
Upon being honorably discharged from the army he returned to
Franklin County. On the 8th day of December, 1864 he was married
to Miss Catherine Buescher by Rev. F.E.R. Mantels. The two first
made their home on a farm near Union, there however they lived
hardly a year, when they moved to Cedar Fork, now Champion City.
Here they lived five years, whereupon they moved to a farm two
miles southwest of Union bordering on the Bourbeuse river. On
this farm they stayed for 22 years after which, now thirty years
ago, they moved to Union. For many years they had charge of a
hotel in Union.
In the year 1917 on the 28th day of December, Mrs. Winkelmeyer
preceded her husband in death after they had shared the joys and
sorrow of married life for over 53 years. Their union was
blessed with 11 children, five of which survive their parents.
They are Mrs. Mary Watters of Union; William Winkelmeyer of East
St. Louis; Mrs. Pauline Vedder of Union; Edwin Winkelmeyer of
St. Louis and Emil Winkelmeyer of Kansas City, KS. Also
two daughter-in-law, Mrs Emma Winkelmeyer of Union and Mrs.
Josephine Zielinski nee Danz, widow of Edward Winkelmeyer, a
son-in-law, Henry Vedder and eight grandchildren.
For a number of years, the deceased had suffered from gall
stones. His natural physical vigor had heretofore enabled
him to rally after a severe attack of this trouble. Last Sunday
he was again subjected to an attack and early Tuesday morning
his condition was severely aggravated by a paralytic stroke so
that he passed away Tuesday afternoon, the 23rd day of May,
1922, at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 16 days.
Thursday afternoon funeral services were conducted in his honor
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vedder, with whom the deceased
had lived for some years, after which the body was most tenderly
laid to rest beside the earthly remains of his wife in the Odd
Fellows Cemetery at Union. Rev. H. E. Koenig officiating.
His death is deeply mourned by his children,
grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends."

County, Missouri. She was buried in Bethel Cemetery in Labadie,
Franklin County, Missouri. Helena C. Buescher's obituary printed
in the Union, Missouri newspaper on March 14, 1919
The visitation of Death into a home is perhaps the most
unwelcome manifestation of the works of an Almighty Providence
that is known to the human mind. But when that visit comes
suddenly and takes from the home a mother of small children, at
a time when she is so much needed by children and husband, that
visit is doubly painful, and brings on it's wings all of the
agony and sorrow that human hearts can bear. Such was the gloom
and despair that settled over the home of Frank Jenny in St.
Louis last Thursday, March 6th, when the Death Angel visited its
sacred portal and cruelly snatched from its tender environment,
his beloved wife, Helena C. Jenny, nee Buescher. She died of
pneumonia following influenza and was ill but a few days.
The deceased was born at Labaddie, Missouri, December 10th,
1889, and was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Buescher of
that place. She was 29 years, 2 months, and 26 days of age when
the Master called her. She was married December 18th, 1912, to
Frank Jenny of Union. To this union two children were born,
Letha Adele Jenny and Vance Buescher Jenny, both cruelly
deprived of a mother and all her sweet influence before they are
old enough to understand their terrible loss. Besides her
parents and husband and two small children she leaves one
sister, Mrs. L. J. Fink, of Union, and three brothers, Wm. T.,
Harry and Walter Buescher, all of Labaddie, members of her
immediate family , and a host of other relatives and friends to
mourn for her.
Mrs. Jenny was well and favorably known here in Union, where she
attended high school when but a girl, but where she won the
everlasting affection of teachers and classmates, by her sweet
and gentle traits of character. It was the happy privilege of
the author of this sketch to be one of her teachers at that
time, and it was in that relationship of teacher and pupil that
he learned to love and respect her for her many queenly
attributes, and that feeling has not diminished as the years
have gone by, until our admiration for her had become almost a
passion. She was a friend on whom one could depend in every
crisis, and by her personal magnetism she bound her friends to
her with cords of love. Generous she was to a fault, and her
lips were never soiled by unkind criticisms of the acts or deeds
of others, but with charity for all she left the unkind word
unrepeated. She took a keen interest in public affairs, but her
one paramount interest centered in her own family and home. She
was ever proud of her husband and his achievements, and was to
him a real helpmate in all that made for a happy home and
family. By disposition and temperament, she was the perfect
complement to his character and qualities to such a degree as to
insure an ideal family relationship. And to her children she was
the embodiment of the mother heart, guided by reason and
intelligence. There was no sacrifice too great for her to make
for their comfort and wholesome development. She was gentle,
kind and industrious and her short life was filled with loving
deeds and gentle ministrations, and this old world is better to
live in because of her ideals of living. Many lives have been
encouraged and inspired by coming in contact with her life. But
today the home that she was wont to grace is in deepest gloom
and a devoted husband and two little children are sadly bereft
of wife and mother just when she was the heart and spirit of
that family circle. Despair, grim and unspeakable, tear at their
heartstrings and they refuse to be comforted. May the Spirit
that can furnish balm to souls in a time like this, comfort and
soothe these loved ones in this their hour of trial. And may
stoop:
"To see the light of day.
Across the mournful marbles play,
And learn the truth to flesh unknown,
That love can never lose its own.
That somehow, somewhere, meet we must."
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Lord at the Methodist
church in Labaddie last Sunday afternoon after which her body
was born to its last resting place in the Bethel cemetery near
Labaddie where a large gathering of friends had assembled to pay
their last respects to one whom they universally loved. Many
floral emblems spoke eloquently of this esteem and love. May we
honor her live by imitating her many virtues.

Attorney Frank Jenny Knew How to Get Things Done
By Sue Blesi
Frank W. Jenny was born in Union on February 2, 1889, the son of
John J. and Marianna (Biller) Jenny, also Franklin County
natives. He was a shaker and mover, worthy of a place in the
history of our county.
He graduated from Union High School in 1905 and began teaching
in the rural schools of Franklin County, furthering his own
education at the State Teacher's College at Warrensburg during
the summers. He taught at Spring Creek, Huff, Krakow, Pike's
Peak and Oakfield. For 10 years, he worked for the railway mail
service out of St. Louis, riding the Rock Island trains to
deliver mail to outlying towns, all the while attending night
classes at St. Louis University Law School.
Jenny earned an L.L.B. in 1922, passed the bar examination, and
opened a law office in Union in 1922. He was associated with
Attorney W. L. Cole. In later years, his partners were James A.
Cole and Lawrence Davis, comprising the Jenny, Cole and Davis
law firm. Frank Jenny served several terms as prosecuting
attorney, during which time he was responsible for bringing
serial killer Bertha Gifford to trial.
He was a man who knew how to get things done. Retired Federal
Judge Lawrence "Larry" Davis, once a junior partner in Frank
Jenny's law firm, recalls that Frank Jenny, L. B. Eckelkamp,
Lester Dill, and Father Hildner, were responsible for getting
the bridge built over the Missouri River in 1934. Attorney Jenny
served as Union mayor from 1937 to 1941. During his time in
office, the memorial auditorium was built and numerous WPA
projects were completed. He was active in the Modern Woodmen of
America, the Elks, Lions, the Masonic Lodge, the Union Chamber
of Commerce, and the Presbyterian Church. A Republican, he was
chairman of the county central committee. In addition to farming
320 acres, Jenny took on the project of re-opening the Virginia
Mines (lead) during World War II.
In December 1912, Jenny married Helen C. Buescher, the daughter
of Anton and Elise (Warnebold) Buescher. They had two children,
Letha (Jenny) Williams, who married L. J. Williams, who owned
several theatres and was the son of Dr. and Mrs. D. E. Williams;
and Vance Buescher Jenny, who married Alice Goodwin. Both Letha
and Vance are deceased. Helen Jenny died in March 1919, leaving
Frank to raise two young children. The Buescher grandparents
helped him with the children. On February 21, 1928, Frank Jenny
married Loraine Mueller, the daughter of Robert and Caroline
(Gorg) Mueller of Union. Loraine Jenny was instrumental in
starting a library at Union.
After practicing law in Union for 44 years, Frank Jenny died in
1965 at age 76 following a long illness.
When Frank Jenny's father, John J. Jenny, Jr., was working on
building an addition to the predecessor of our historic
courthouse, he lost a brick-layers' tool. When the building was
being wrecked in 1922, he asked Frank's brother, Paul Jenny, to
look for the tool, describing the location. Paul Jenny was able
to find the tool from his father's description.
The grandfather of Frank Jenny, John J. Jenny, Sr., immigrated
from Switzerland in 1844 with his bride, Verona (Tschudy). Their
son, John J. Jenny, Jr., was born at Jeffriesburg in 1852.
My husband, Glen Blesi, has long been aware of a family
connection to Frank Jenny. In fact, he had been told that Frank
Jenny was the closest relative his grandfather, Henry Blesi, had
in Franklin County. After a decade of serious research, Glen had
determined that the men were 7th cousins, once removed, through
the Jenny line. Knowing the connection had to be closer, Glen
continued to research. A couple of weeks ago, the mystery was
solved when Glen learned through Patrick Wild of Switzerland
that Henry Blesi was a second cousin to Frank Jenny through the
Tschudy lineage. Verona Tschudy's sister, Katharina Tschudy
Blesi, was Henry Blesi's grandmother.
Frank Jenny's son, Vance, named one of his sons Frank Jenny.
Young Frank Jenny is an attorney in Franklin County, Washington
(state).

11, 1998
This is the story of the Spanish Flu Epidemic
as told to me by my mother, Wilma Doerr who was born March 5,
1900
Wilma was born and raised on a small farm
outside Union, Mo. On her 17th birthday, she came into
Union and worked for a large shoe factory. She may have
caught the flu at the shoe factory, but at the same time, a very
serious type of measles was also present. My Mother came
down with the flu and measles at the same time.
She was staying with an older sister (Hallie) in
Union. Since he was the one and only doctor, Dr. Edward
Stierberger was really stretched thin by all the illness.
There was nothing he could do in the way of medicine.
The sister applied cold, wet sheets to her entire body,
night and day and the good doctor came by 3 or 4 times a day to
check on her and give further orders. For three nights in
a row, he came and spent the night at my Mother's bedside.
Since it had been days that he had been able to go to bed,
he ordered my aunt to let him sleep an hour at a time and then
to wake him up to check on his patient. He slept on a
straight chair by the bed. My aunt had a small daughter
(Irene) and Dr. Stierberger ordered the child out of the house.
When my aunt said she had no one to keep her, the doctor
said to take her to a neighbor and tell them to keep her.
Finally at the end of a long week, Wilma's
fever broke and she began the road to recovery. When she
was finally able to return to her shoe factory work, she went to
Dr. Stierberger to start paying her bill. He asked how
much she was making at her job which $2.00 or $3.00 per week.
He told her to forget the bill as she needed it more than
he. Wilma lived to be nearly 90 years.

Janis Williams, born about 1949; married Richard Wilson.
67. Vance Buescher Jenny (Helena C. Buescher-3, Anton-2,
Wilhelm-1) was born on 16 April 1917. He died on 5 April 2010 at
the age of 92 in Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis County,
Missouri. Vance Buescher Jenny, who spent most of his long life
in Franklin County, was a patient at Missouri Baptist Hospital
twice in his life. He was born there April 16, 1917,
and passed away there after a short illness Monday, April 5,
2010, a few hours after his 93rd Easter Sunday. Mr. Jenny
was the son of a longtime Union attorney, Frank W. Jenny, and
wife Helena, nee Buescher. He was stricken with polio when
he was just 1 year old, leaving him with lifelong physical
challenges. He was widely admired for the way he quietly
overcame what some would have considered a disability. His
mother, Helena, who had so lovingly cared for him during his
early illness, herself succumbed to the great influenza epidemic
of 1919 before her son's second birthday. Her obituary in
the March 14, 1919, edition of the Union newspaper was written
by Charles Cole, the founder of Union High School. Cole had been
Helena's teacher and would later be Vance's. Cole reported
that Vance and his sister, Letha, were "both cruelly deprived of
a mother and all her sweet influence before they are old enough
to understand their terrible loss." After his mother's
death, Mr. Jenny's childhood was divided between his father's
home in Union and his maternal grandparents' farm along the
Missouri River in Labadie. Mr. Jenny received his
schooling in Union. Along with his father and eldest daughter,
he was honored in the early 1960s as the first instance of three
generations graduating from Union High School.
He met his soul mate, Alice Goodwin, in the summer of 1940 on
the dance pavilion of the American Legion Park, Pacific. When
they had another chance meeting on a St. Louis streetcar a few
weeks later, he immediately recognized her. Apparently, less
smitten, she did not remember him. But over time, she came
to appreciate his inner qualities and they were married June 21,
1941, at St. Peter's Evangelical Church, St. Louis. Four
children were born of this marriage. Alice died of cancer in
1977 at the age of 56 after 35 years of marriage. Vance looked
after her grave for the next 33 years. He married Bernice
Scheske in 1979. They enjoyed 14 years of retirement, dividing
their time between Missouri and Florida. She died of cancer in
1993.
Mr. Jenny's first job was at Busch's Hardware Store on the
courthouse square in Union. He also was a volunteer firefighter.
Since he worked next door to the fire station, he was usually
the first to arrive and drove the fire truck. After a
time, he migrated to St. Louis, where he mastered the
electrician's trade. His skills as an electrician were often
donated to churches and civic groups over the years. With
America's entry into World War II in the early 1940s, Mr. Jenny
was disappointed to learn his polio affliction prevented him
from serving in the military. He argued with the Army
brass that his inability to pass a physical wouldn't keep him
from doing any number of vital jobs, such as being a mechanic.
But rules were rules, so Mr. Jenny went to work for a new
company that had started near the St. Louis Airport called
McDonnell Aircraft. Some warned him against working for a
defense contractor that was sure to close once the war was over,
but he considered it his contribution to the war effort. He
eventually worked for McDonnell and its successors for 36 years.
He started as an electrician with McDonnell and soon
became the electrical maintenance foreman on the night shift.
The men on his crews were like members of his family.
Co-workers remember him as a supervisor who was never
criticized by anyone. For over 3 decades, he was there as the
electrical facilities were added to each new building. Mr.
Jenny prided himself in knowing every electrical installation in
the complex, often remarking, "If there was a fire anywhere in
the plant, I'd know right where to go to shut off the power."
When carpooling and commuting became commonplace in the
1950s, he was delighted to move back to Franklin County in 1953.
From that point forward, he made his home in the Union and St.
Clair areas.
Mr. Jenny was baptized in infancy at Labadie Methodist Church
and later confirmed at First Presbyterian Church of Union. He
served as a deacon of the latter church, where his wife, Alice,
was an elder and longtime Sunday school teacher.
He was a longtime member of the Union Saddle Club. He served as
the club's president for three years and his wife, Alice, was
secretary. Mr. Jenny was president when the saddle
club grounds were purchased and was very involved in the
development of those grounds. His name is included on a plaque
in the saddle club building honoring prominent members. He
was a charter member of the Union Optimist Club and he and Alice
were quite active in that organization's youth programs for a
number of years. He also was a 4-H electricity project leader
for many years. Mr. Jenny remained active until shortly
before his death. He purchased his first computer at 89 and even
in his 90s continued to make new friends and pursue new
interests. Early in life, he developed a close bond with
his first cousin, Emmett Fink. Their mothers were the Buescher
sisters from Labadie. Neither had a brother and their
relationship came to resemble that of brothers. Mr. Fink
survives him. For over nine decades Mr. Jenny enjoyed an
especially close relationship with his beloved only sister,
Letha Williams. Her death two years ago at the age of 93 was a
great loss to him. Others who preceded him in death
included his mother, Helena Jenny, in 1919; his father, Frank W.
Jenny, in 1965; his stepmother of more than 50 years, Lorraine
Jenny, in 1984; and his brother-in-law, L.J. "Bill" Williams in
1988.
Those who survive him include four children, June Andersen and
husband Hans, California state, Carole Jenny M.D., and husband
Thomas Roesler M.D., Rhode Island state, Frank Jenny and fiancee
Terri Ann Henricks, Washington state, and Alice Lee Williams and
husband Jim, North Carolina state; seven grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; two nieces, Pam Van Nieuwenhuize, California
state, and Janis Wilson and husband Richard, Alaska state; three
grandnephews; one grandniece; his cousin, Emmett Fink and wife
Jeanne, Union, and their children, Prudence Fink Johnson and
husband Nels, Union, and Patti Fleer and husband Roger,
Washington, and their four grandchildren; the residents and
staff of Crabapple Village Retirement Community, St. Clair;
other relatives and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, the family prefers donations to County Seat Senior
Foundation, in memory of Vance. B. Jenny, County Seat Senior
Citizens Center, 1329 N. Union Ave., Union, MO 63084. The

to whom she was extraordinarily devoted. She was a tireless
shopper and a lively talker, never at a loss for words.
She enjoyed having friends and family over for a home-cooked
meal that usually featured fresh vegetables, homemade jelly and
more recently, delicious fresh bread, baked by her husband.
Mrs. Fink was a gracious hostess. There was always enough food
and room for one more person at her table. The guest room was
always prepared. A pot of tea or a cup of coffee and a little
dessert were always ready to be offered to all who stopped by to
visit.

of Missouri in St. Louis. She earned her master's degree in
education from Webster University in St. Louis.

Shortly after returning to the United States, the family moved
to her husband's family farm in Jeffriesburg.
She then taught fifth grade and first grade at Central
Elementary School in Union for over a decade until her
retirement. She loved her young students. In return, she was
loved by them too. After she retired, she was often greeted by
her former students when they would see her around the
community.
Mrs. Fink was a member of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma
and the chair of the Franklin County Public School Retirees
Scholarship Committee for a number of years, up to the time of

MY LIFE:
I was told that when I was four in 1942 and my
mother was pregnant with my brother Richard, we had to be
removed from a flooded home in a row boat. It was near the
Mississippi River near Foley, Missouri. My dad was a guard
at the Lock and Dam during World War Two.
When my uncle who was in the Marine Corps came home
from fighting the Japanese, he gave me a large red fire truck
for my birthday. This was the same day he got married.
One summer he let me use his carbine from the Marine Corps
to kill snakes on my great-grandfathers farm.
I went to Immaculate Conception grade school.
I was the teachers pet for all eight years because I
always helped them. At the end of the school year, the
nuns always gave me some gift. When I was in grade
eight, I did their errands for them during school time and in
the summer I would help them also.
After grade school, I was going to study to be a
Catholic priest. My biggest mistake in my life was that I
did not do it. God forgive me!
Then I went to St. Francis Borgia High School.
No sports or anything after school because I had to ride
the school bus and did not have a car. My last year at
school, I was the artist for the school paper and year book.
When I became 16, (sophomore in school) I
joined the National Guard (Heavy Mortar Company). Since I
did not have a car, my sergeant would take me to the meetings.
In the summer we spent two weeks at an army base.
We had training in riot control in case of a riot at
the state prison. After I was 18 1/2 years old, I enlisted
in the Navy but failed my physical. The Draft Board made
me 4-F. I received an honorable discharge 8 years later.
My summers before I was 18, I spent walking or
riding my bike around town and visiting the lady at the Draft
Board and my great aunt, who was the secretary to the County
School Superintendent. Also talked to the old men who
spent their time sitting on the benches at the courthouse.
Also spent time at the soda counters. Learned a lot from
these people.
Had different jobs from 1956 to 2000. Run a
bowling alley. Ground up meat for a pot pie factory.
Inventory control at a factory that made metal sewer
pipes. St. Louis Police department telephone switchboard
keeping track of beat policeman (before walkie-talkies) they
used phones (call boxes) on street corners to call in once an
hour. Counting money at a bank and working in the
stockroom and printing department at the same bank.
Pattern maker at a shoe factory. Inventory and
Quality Control at a place that made wall paneling.
Shipping-Receiving clerk at a shoe factory. Quality
Control at a factory that made ring binders and office supplies.
Had to retire early in 2001 because the place where
I worked moved to Mexico. Had to sell house and used the
profit to buy a used mobile home. Over the years, four
places that I worked at closed their doors.
Over the years because of the closings, I had
lost two homes, one mobile home and three cars.
I was fired for the following reasons: #1- Fired
because I had TB. (I did not have TB). #2-
Fired for asking for a raise in pay that I was promised.
#3- Fired for not talking to my ex wife. Both
of us fired!
MY HOBBY:
Since 1985, I have been researching families that are
related to me and my family. I started out with a little
note book that my dad had written that had his siblings and
uncles and aunts.
Then I went to a lot of cemeteries checking for relatives.
Also wrote to every one in Germany that had my dad and
mom's last name. After I got internet service in the 90's,
I put what I had on a website. Some saw the website and
sent me information from Germany, France, Netherlands and United
States.
One day going to a cemetery, my son and I almost died when
we were going down a hill (at bottom is Missouri River) and the
brakes on the car did not work. I made a quick right turn
and the car hit a ditch right at the cemetery that we were
looking to check. After checking the cemetery and getting
pulled out of the ditch, I drove the car 85 miles back home
without brakes because it was Sunday and no repair shops were
open. Found out later that the brake line broke and leaked
fluid.
Now you can check on the internet for the same information
that I risked my life to get. Makes it a lot easier.
